solid cantonese restaurant, my family loves coming here for their breakfast sets which are affordable and delicious. their sets come with egg, toast and a drink for under $10. i always get their instant noodles and its such a comforting and nostalgic dish.
I usually come to High Five for their set meals (常餐), but this time I finally got up early enough for their breakfast sets lol. The breakfast is cheaper ($8.25) but also comes in a smaller portion, which I think it's still enough. Each noodle set comes with eggs of your choice, butter toast and hot drink. Their Hong Kong style milk tea and iced lemon tea taste super authentic, exactly like what I grew up having in HK. Tipping is also appreciated but not required! *Satay Beef over Vermicelli 沙嗲牛肉米粉 ** *Spiced Minced Pork over Noodle 五香肉丁公仔麵 ** *Macaroni Noodle Soup with Ham 火腿通粉 They make the 五香肉丁 in house, so it's already miles better than the canned ones. And I get their satay beef every time because this is the BEST I've had in NYC! I've been let down by so many spots, but this one tastes exactly like the kind I grew up with. Savory, peanut-y, and sooo good with instant noodles or vermicelli. *HK Style French Toast 一口西多士 $6 * Almost every table ordered the french toast and now I get why. Since it's cut into cubes, you get extra crispy edges in every bite. The center was filled with peanut butter. Crunchy, buttery, and sooo nostalgic. *HK Street Style Shu Mai 魚肉燒賣 $4.5 One of my favorite HK street snacks, and it's actually hard to find fish paste shumai in NYC. These are bouncy and perfect with a drizzle of sweet soy sauce. It's definitely pricier than what you'd get in HK, but it hit the craving. ***old review in 2025*** So many people have asked me about my favorite Hong Kong food spot in NYC… I don’t gatekeep anymore — this is hands down my #1 HK cafe for set meals (常餐)! Hot take: the HK cafes in Bensonhurst are not only BETTER but also CHEAPER than the ones in other boroughs. P.S. don’t be fooled by their low google rating. Most of the complaints are about the service. But anyone from HK will tell you, it’s probably not authentic HK if it’s too friendly. There’s even a note saying tips are appreciated but not required lol. *3 Toppings with Noodle 三拼粉麵 $11.75 * I highly recommend trying the Shredded Pork with Preserved Vegetables (雪菜肉絲) and the Spiced Minced Pork (五香肉丁) because both are housemade! It’s impossible to find spiced minced pork in the US, so I was surprised to see it on the menu. Dare I say, it’s way better than the canned version! *Satay Beef over Vermicelli Noodle 沙嗲牛肉米粉 $8.25 (Breakfast) * Fight me if you disagree: this is hands down the BEST satay beef I’ve had in NYC. I’ve been disappointed by so many others, but this one tastes exactly like the one I grew up eating. It is savory, peanut-y, and pairs perfectly with Nissin instant noodle or vermicelli noodle. *Scallion Pork Cutlet with Egg over Rice 蔥油豬扒煎蛋飯 $12 * The scallion oil was aromatic. Pork cutlet, scallion, and sunny-side-up egg are an unbeatable trio. * complimentary hot drink or iced drink for $1 *Steamed Rice Roll with House Special Sauce 混醬腸粉 $4.50 My fam gets this every time, but to be honest, I wasn’t into it. The peanut-to-soy sauce ratio was off, and the rice roll texture was too mushy. *Satay Beef Sandwich 沙嗲牛肉三文治 $6 Love their satay beef – even better when you add scrambled eggs! Perfect combo.
This place is a no frills cha chan tang. Service was OK, we got our food quickly and paid quickly. Wish they were friendlier but it's fine. We got the imitation shark fin soup, rice rolls with mixed sauce, fried three treasures and Hk milk tea. The soup and the milk tea were average at best. The rice rolls were soft and bouncy and had a perfect sauce mixture that was well balanced, portion was also quite good. The fried three treasures were delicious, they have a light batter which makes it slightly crispy and sticks well to the slightly sweet soy sauce, the fish/shrimp paste was nice and bouncy. Everything came to $23 for a quick afternoon snack and was filling for the two of us. I would stop by again for an afternoon snack.
Overall a 3.75/5. Let's start with the good. The noodle soup where you can choose your own soup base was quite delicious and jam packed with a generous portion of ingredients! My wife also really liked the sharkfin soup, which she said was more flavorful than the one from Kowloon. The seating was spacious and comfortable, and the interior design was reflective of your typical cha chan tang. Now onto the not so great. The corned beef egg sandwich had plenty of egg but very little corned beef, which basically made it taste like just an egg sandwich unfortunately. The satay beef was also not that great and lacked the nutty and creaminess that classic satay beef often has, which was the most disappointing for me for that dish was what I looked forward to the most. The red bean ice drink was quite heavy on the ice and since the red bean wasn't blended, most of the ice trapped the red bean and made the drink less than average. The staff weren't that sociable and seemed to keep to themselves in the back area. Water is self-served so there's really minimal interaction with staff, but their lack of smile just made the atmosphere less enjoyable than it could have been. Overall I believe High Five has potential of being another good HK style cha chan tang in Brooklyn, so I hope they can continue to improve certain selections while maintaining consistency on the items that they are doing so well in. I will definitely be back to try some of their other dishes nonetheless. Thank you for reading and best of luck! (:
Read the menu carefully! I ordered the combo C, which offered a meal and a hot drink. I asked for a cold drink, but they charged me for it, so I didn’t get a free drink with my combo. Then, the waitress asked if I wanted ramen or rice noodles, which made me think I could choose any without any additional charge. However, I was mistaken. All these options were listed in the menu, but I didn’t bother to read about them because they were small. It would’ve been nice if the waitress was kindly to let me know it was an extra charge.
