Stepping into this bakery felt like traveling back in time to the 1980s—it has wonderful retro charm. Their famous sponge cake truly lives up to the hype; it was incredibly fluffy and delicious. The staff were very kind, and the constant, unbroken line of customers proved just how popular this spot remains
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A Hidden Gem Worth Finding! Kam Hing Coffee Shop is truly a hidden hole-in-the-wall treasure! We stopped by and were blown away by their incredible sponge cakes – we tried the coconut and strawberry flavors, and both were light, fluffy, and absolutely delicious. What made the experience even better was the staff. They went out of their way to modify our teas since we’re lactose intolerant, and the result was perfect – flavorful, refreshing, and just right. This place has that cozy, authentic charm that’s hard to find. Amazing food, warm service, and unbeatable sponge cakes – definitely worth a visit!
Coffee Shop No. 528 Kam Hing Coffee Shop Chinatown, NYC August 1, 2025 Kam Hing Coffee Shop – A Slice of Old New York Kam Hing Coffee Shop is a no-frills yet charming old-school spot that’s been around since the early 1980s. A true local favorite, best known for its traditional Chinese-style sponge cakes that can sell out early. We arrived early and ordered a pandan sponge cake and a Vietnamese coffee, then sat back to watch the friendly, hardworking lady behind the counter in action. She moved with practiced rhythm, handing out single sponge cakes in little brown bags and boxes stacked high for waiting customers. For $1.50, the pandan sponge cake was a simple delight—light, fragrant, and worth every penny. If we hadn’t already planned brunch, I would have tried every flavor. The eclectic decor added to the charm: from a quirky “hairy dude” statue wearing a traditional bamboo conical hat to playful sponge cake characters and vintage coffee signs covering the walls. Every corner had a story. Cortados may not be on the menu, but that’s never the point for me. I visit coffee shops to get a small glimpse into how they reflect the heart of their communities—and Kam Hing does that beautifully. A delicious cortado is just an added bonus. Enjoying life, one coffee shop at a time.
A long-established cake shop in New York's Chinatown recommended by Xiaohongshu. The individual items are relatively simple. Coffee, milk tea, cake No other items I personally prefer the original flavor of paper-wrapped cakes. I heard this is the original store. The other stores only sell replicas.
The sponges cakes are absolutely delicious but I’m always finding egg shells in these. Have been getting them for almost a year and every time I find an egg shell or two. Very upsetting when you bite into the soft sponge cake and find something crispy that completely throws you off. No longer am able to enjoy it as because of having to be on constant lookout for egg shells.
