Ollie’s Place opens from 12-5pm in the Weekend. They have lots of friendly and very sweet kitties. The cats are free roaming and welcome visitors to interact and socialize so they are more adoptable.
God bless all the volunteers here and the work they do. I just had to put down my baby girl Moonie (AKA “Hoot”) earlier today due to late stage kidney failure, which I only figured out about this morning, after taking her to the vet yesterday after a few sick “off” days. Extremely sudden. There’s nothing I could have done. I only adopted her a year and a half ago :( The volunteers are super hands on and helpful even after I adopted her, specifically Jocelyn and Mike and Peri. Helping me pick out food for her, help if I needed some specific med or supplement, what vet to choose and what to ask the vet for, etc. Peri is a 10/10 pet sitter and I felt so safe leaving Moonie with her since she knows how to handle cats in case of emergency and give meds etc. And she already knew Moonie from volunteering at the shelter so they were buddies and she spent a long time with her during visits. Moonie was a feisty girl and hard to handle when it came to vet visits and medication, and volunteers would come help me give her gabapentin prior to an appointment, antibiotic shots when she had an infection, etc. Mike literally came every day for like 2 weeks to give her shots and she was nottt easy with that and screamed bloody murder every time lol. Jocelyn is super knowledgeable and was very responsive when I texted her any questions or issues Moonie was having. And they all supported me today and called and texted me (crying with me through it) which helped tremendously since they have so much experience with this. I don’t know how they do it, seeing so much pain and loss with animals and their owners, they really are angels! And they care about every cat so so much! I see some bad reviews here, but the team really just wants to make sure the cats are a good fit for people and their homes/lifestyle. Moonie was my soulmate cat, even after having another sudden traumatizing cat loss a few years ago (I can’t believe it’s happening a second time), I wouldn’t trade her for the world. I am so grateful for the team for adopting her out to me, and I’m happy I could give a shelter girl her first house cat experience. And spoil her up until her very last day. She is no longer in pain, and I carry it for her now, along with all the beautiful happy memories. Anyway, I highly recommend this place. It’s great to adopt a cat that has already gone to the vet and is in good shape before you adopt them. And basically a whole entourage of people helping you with your cat even years after adopting.
Even if you have no intention to adopt (I was visiting from out of town, for example), everyone can benefit from some quiet cat time right in the middle of the city's chaos. I just walked in and spent quality time with the kitty residents and chatted with the welcoming volunteers. The space is very small, so be mindful not to overcrowd the cats or be in the volunteers' way while they work (also, there is an aggressive urine smell, as to be expected in tight quarters with multiple cats). There is a restroom for visitors as well. Although it is technically free to visit the cats, there is a donation box near the door (as well as an online payment QR code) that I would urge you to contribute to for your visit.
I just know that they've been rescuing feral stray felines for adoption for more than a minute with volunteers giving them daily contact, providing them required and necessary medical attention, taking the time to learn their dietary preferences and as much detail as possible to insure a successful placement; sometimes keeping these animals indefinitely... And that's no feat in an East Village basement storefront.,
Ollie’s Place in East Village is a small non-profit cat adoption center that is run totally by volunteers. During the visiting hours the kitties have the run of the house which is a perfect environment for them to transition into forever home. Visitors have a chance to interact with them and ask questions. The place just got spruce up and now it looks spacious and beautiful with new cat furniture. The cats are happy, playful and well taken care of. Please note the center depends on $donation so un-opened cat food and supplies are greatly appreciated.
