Spongies Cafe

We went here specifically for the sponge cakes and were not disappointed. Light fluffy and delicious! Good price. The original spongie being only $2. Flavours $3 The cafe is small but cosy. If you went in for a coffee and a spongie, and got a seat, it is a lovely vibe. We got our cakes to go, but I would go again and take a seat. Definitely recommended!

The sponge cake wrapped in paper is a delicacy from Hong Kong, and a dessert for most. Before Spongies Cafe opened, Chinatown had only one good place for sponge cakes, right across the street from it. The problem was, they made their sponge cakes too wet. The other shops in Chinatown are not very good. When this place opened in 2021, it instantly became a smash hit in Chinatown. The hispanic owner managed to capture the flavorful sweet yet spongy taste of a sponge cake directly from Hong Kong. In addition, he learned Cantonese to serve his customers better. This is truly a dedication to an art. The sponge cakes I recommend are regular and chocolate chip. They are not too sweet but sweet enough to be a good dessert. I recommend also to get them hot, right after they come out from the oven, as they taste warm and gooey in your mouth, making the experience even better. The price is good for a tasty snack after lunch/dinner. The environment is clean and welcoming, and the staff are very nice, especially the owner. There are tables on the side for a small chit-chat with friends while enjoying this special dessert. Food - 10/10 Service - 11/10 Quality - 10/10 Environment - 10/10

Walked in on a snowy Sunday evening and was served immediately. The sponge cakes are all ready to go at room temp. They're super fluffy and squishy, and so light and airy that you feel like you could eat multiple of them in one sitting. Each one was about $2. I tried pandan coconut, holiday sprinkles, and taro. My favorite was the pandan, it had the most unique and standout flavor. I didn't notice the taro flavor much. The sprinkles one is tad bit sweeter if you like that. Though overall it's not a very sweet dessert, and more of a doughy bun flavor.

Variety of flavors that all taste great! Texture is what you expect from a sponge cake, soft and fluffy. Cash only if you’re total is under $5. More than $5 and you can pay with card/apple pay. One complaint is that the sponge cakes are not labeled and all look very similar, so if you buy a variety you won’t easily be able to tell which flavor is which. Other than that. I loved every flavor!

These Hong Kong-style "paper-wrapped" sponge cakes are really lighter than air! And very delicious! And the price is very right! Rhe owner is a Mexican imigrant that trained for 30 years before opening his own shop. Try any flavour and you will go insane!
