Spacious and casual self-serve individual hotpot spot. You can grab a clean bowl and tongs from the clean cutlery cabinet. Grab your veggies first, then starch/carbs and lastly protein. Take it to the cashier to get it weighed, pic your base and pay. They give you one of the pagers which beeps when your food is ready. They also have a sauce and water station. If you want to buy a drink grab it before you get in line from the refrigerators next to the cashier. I like their original bone broth- medium spicy. Their spicy is more the tingling/ numbing peppercorn spicy and not chili spicy. Medium is plenty tingly for me. They have a decent selection and is very spacious to dine in. The place is always clean and the service is very quick even for the big flat noodles and starches.
I would definitely recommend Yang Guo Fu Malatang to anyone who enjoys spicy food or wants to try authentic Chinese malatang. I will come back again 🌶️🍜
Yangguofu is a prominent national chain in China, specializing in customizable Mala Tang. How it works is the 'pick your own' format for your bowl, offering the choice of a spicy soup or a spicy dry pot. Since there's many options in the area it's less impressive, the warm, flavorful heat is absolutely perfect for hitting the spot on a cold winter day.
I just so happened to stumble across this place while checking out the different restaurants and stores located here in Flushing Queens mirror Citi field. I figured I would get some authentic Chinese food and here I landed. When I walked in it was hard to communicate with the staff members because they're Spanish and English was very limited. This doesn't make good for customer service. I believe they should always have someone representing who can speak English and Spanish fluently especially English if you are in the United States . So the bowls that I set for you to collect your raw food I look at it in a container that looks similar to a refrigerator I'm assuming to keep the bowls and tongs sanitized. When approaching the buffet on the lid that Culver's over the food you will see the names of the items listed. This was helpful but still a bit difficult. A lot of the items I did not recognize and it did not taste like but I'm familiar with. Such as the turnip I got approximately five pieces of this round so called vegetable and I did not taste like time it was very gummy. Perhaps in Chinese turnip is different from the American turnip I don't know nonetheless I continued Empower my plate with fresh vegetables and then I came across the fishing balls which appear to me to be some kind of Pasty product rolled into a ball with flavoring. Coming towards the end I got noodles ramen as well as some mushrooms and bought it to the counter requested that I have the food prepared as a soup they did not understand me and there was an extra charge for what it was not clear. With the small amount of English spoken from the staff member it was explained that I was being charged for the soup base which is abroad but I just asked whether or not I could have it as a soup and I was told no this is why it's so important for English to be understood so they prepared my meal dry, it was good but I would have much more preferred a soup. The cost was a little bit more than I expected because they charge you per pound so if you want a lot of vegetables don't pound your plate up with a whole bunch of news or anything that's heavy. The Ambiance was nothing to Rave about just a room filled with chairs and some coloring on the wall nothing special it was kept neat however they have a little area where you can self serve sauces and condiments that area was nasty sauces were spilled on the counter and the floor was sticky. That's why a four-star was given. As always I suggest you try it for yourself
Sometimes you just want something warm, filling, and easy and Yang Guo Fu Malatang in Flushing hits the spot. I came in just planning to try a little, but (as always) I got carried away. It’s a self-serve setup: grab a bowl, pick out your ingredients, choose a broth, and they cook it for you on the spot. You pay by weight, and at $10.99 per pound, things can add up quick. Mine came out to just over 2 lbs… so yeah, I went a little overboard. I filled my bowl with all the usual suspects: napa cabbage, fatty beef, lamb slices, mini sausages, fish tofu, egg tofu, quail eggs, konjac noodles, and a few chunks of Spam. If you’ve ever had malatang, you know it’s all about texture some chewy, some melty, some crisp and this combo really hit all the marks. Malatang (麻辣烫) is a street food favorite from Sichuan, known for its spicy, numbing flavors. It started out with vendors serving skewered ingredients in communal pots of broth, and evolved into this more modern, customizable version. Yang Guo Fu is actually one of the biggest malatang chains in China, so it’s kind of cool to see it pop up in NYC. I tried two broths: the Classic Herbal Beef Bone Broth and the Sweet & Sour Tomato Broth. The beef broth had a mild kick not super spicy, even with my high spice tolerance but still warm and cozy. I didn’t taste much of the herbal notes, though. The tomato broth was sweeter and more tangy, but honestly had a slightly artificial vibe. Not bad, just not super rich or layered. What made up for the average broths was the sheer fun of choosing exactly what I wanted and everything was fresh and cooked well. As a bonus, they serve a tiny bowl of 冰粉 (bing fen) at the end, a cooling jelly dessert from Sichuan made with sweet potato starch, topped with dried fruit, brown sugar syrup, and nuts. It’s light, sweet, and a nice contrast to the heat of the soup. Overall, it’s not the most unforgettable meal I’ve had, but it’s definitely a fun and satisfying option if you’re in Flushing and want something comforting without the fuss. Just be careful at the ingredient bar it’s way too easy to go overboard.
